Are you supposed to dress up for renaissance festival?

Choosing the best Costume

If you're planning on wearing a costume to a Renaissance Faire, there are some things that you should know to have an enjoyable experience for this day of entertainment. Since it's an outdoor event, you should wear comfortable clothes and bring a parasol and hat but you can wear normal clothes too if you wish, remember this is an entertainment environment. It's also a good idea to wear sunscreen and bug repellent to protect yourself from the elements. You can purchase tickets ahead of time and view the schedule online.

You should follow the Renaissance Faire's costume guidelines carefully. Be sure to check with the Renaissance fair's costume committee before bringing your costume to the Faire. While there are no rules that say you can't wear modern clothing, fairgoers want to see authentic costumes to feel like the era they are living in. Costume rentals are also available at renaissance faires.

It's not absolutely necessary to dress up. But we highly recommend it! Also know that you can do it if you want and that you don't have to do everything you can or have precision in the period. The most important thing is to be comfortable and dressed for the weather. Since many ren faires are held in July, it can be HOT. So you might want to ditch long sleeves and that heavy custom baldric by Grommet's Leathercraft and dress more appropriately for the particular ren faire's weather to become those medieval characters for reenacting an english village. For those with an England lower class personality (such as peasants), basic linen and wool will make up most, if not all, of their renaissance festival costumes, an ideal family cool environment suitable for friends too.

Performers practicing their acts, warming up, usually a person works putting on costumes and the like; depending on acting skills, social skill or additional skill a lot of the flirting, drama, and gossip that is often associated with youth; hourly Wages may vary of the kinds of employment have, like Security person, or some entry level positions, this might be a fun part time work, specially on summer days as seasoned staff. Renaissance festivals are an event held in the United States that imitate the Renaissance period some are for example:

Connecticut Renaissance

Florida Renaissance Festival

Maine Renaissance Faire

NJ Renaissance Festival

The fairs include the sale of handicrafts, Renaissance food & beverage, jousts and plays, all related to the time period. If you want to work at a Renaissance festival, there are plenty of places to work, food service, customer services, kitchen staff etc.

Known for an increase in architectural style that imitated authentic castles and cathedrals of the medieval era, the period also saw the holding of jousting competitions and similar events as early as the 1770s in Europe. A proper costume can be as simple as this Renaissance dress or this tavern maiden outfit, or as complex as this noble gentleman. Women can choose to take the sexy route, such as a Robin Hood-style archer or a beautiful dragon slayer. Most pirate costumes are also accurate for the time, and donning one can be a great way to create a fun costumed character to portray.

Winter isn't here yet (thankfully), so there's no need to prepare. But you can definitely add some Game of Thrones costume inspiration to your Renaissance outfit. As with any costume event, references to pop culture will always attract great reactions. You can even go with Assassin's Creed costumes, as Ezio and Connor games play out in the right time frame.

Now that we know what Renaissance fairs look like today, how accurate are they with what people actually used during that time? We could fill hundreds and hundreds of books with facts and information about true Renaissance fashion (historians and scholars have already done that), but this is only intended to be a brief overview of some important points. Consider it a little more inspiration for those who prefer to enhance or make their own Renaissance costumes from scratch, or simply want to be as authentic as possible. Women (and men) have used makeup and cosmetics to accentuate their appearance for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians have been known to have used primitive eyeliners and mascaras, as well as skin creams and balms to provide sun protection, for example, and almost every period and culture has had some kind of defining makeup movement.

For both men's and women's clothing in the Renaissance, the colors of the garments used had significant meanings. In general, darker and more vibrant colors were attributed to wealth and high society; not only were the dyes needed to create these fabrics much more expensive, but darker colors tend to accentuate the brilliance of gold and jewelry. Red was a color of high social status and royalty. Not only did Elizabeth I use it in several of her portraits, but she was also a color of gentlemen, judges and government officials.

Orange, by comparison, was associated with the poor. We hate to talk about our favorite color like that, but it's true: peasants would try to imitate the upper class, but cheaper dyes resulted in oranges instead of reds. Browns, beiges and grays were also “lower class colors” for the same reasons. Purple is a color associated with royalty and power.

Yellow was a neutral color in some regions, but indicated prostitutes in Renaissance Italy. White symbolizes purity and black symbolizes mourning, as they do today. An important point of men's and women's Renaissance fashion was to modify the natural silhouette of the body, an aspect that is not always faithfully recreated in the modern costumes of the Renaissance Fair, except for the most staunch among us. Beginning in the 1490s, huge quilted sleeves and tights began to appear in northern Europe, and German-influenced styles included many puffs and ruffles around the neck, shoulders and back to change the shape of the human body.

Vendors at a Renaissance Fair are an important part of the event. They are part of the story and must be in character. They should be able to interact with customers, and they should be able to sell items to them. If you're going to a Renaissance Faire, you're probably going to be indulging in a range of delicious foods. Traditional meats and fatty foods, such as "steak on a stick" and "pulled pork sandwiches" are available at many Renaissance fairs village. You'll also find turkey legs as large as your head and an array of other specialty fare. If you're vegetarian or have a special dietary need, you should pack your own food. You can also visit online websites to find out which vendors offer the food you need. And remember to take your medication with you!

Activities

If you love costumes and historical reenactments, you will definitely love the activities at a Renaissance Faire. These festivals are full of people dressed up in medieval attire, ranging from Lords and Ladies of the Renaissance to peasants and pirates. Those who are interested in the time period may also enjoy shopping for costume accessories and weapons.

Knee-length tunics and jerkins (a type of short jackets) were common and created more square silhouettes, accentuating the torso. Pads were used to widen the shoulders, and some men even wore corsets to appear slimmer. A matching but useful function of all the extra layers and padding was warmth. The global climate, especially in Europe, was much colder in the Renaissance than it is today, due in part to the Little Ice Age.
